A nuanced examination of a family falling apart, Early Summer tells the story of the Mamiya family and their efforts to marry off their headstrong daughter, Noriko, played by the extraordinary Setsuko Hara. A seemingly simple story, it is among the director’s most emotionally complex. The Criterion Collection is proud to present one of Ozu’s most enduring classics.

I enjoyed MOVIETITLEMACRO because...

Check out the trailer:

So what’s Night at the Museum [Blu-ray] all about?

Ben Stiller leads an all-star cast including Robin Williams and Dick Van Dyke in this hilarious blockbuster hit. When good-hearted dreamer Larry Daley (Stiller) is hired as night watchman at the Museum of Natural History, he soon discovers that an ancient curse brings all the exhibits to life after the sun sets. Suddenly, Larry finds himself face-to-face with a frisky T. rex skeleton, tiny armies of Romans and cowboys and a mischievous monkey who taunts him to the breaking point. But with the help of President Teddy Roosevelt (Williams), Larry may just figure out a way to control the chaos and become a hero in his son’s eyes. Boasting jaw-dropping special effects and laugh-out-loud moments, Night at the Museum is your ticket to nonstop fun!

Personally, I thought Ben Stiller was incredible, but wasn’t too impressed with Carla Gugino.

So what’s I, Claudius all about?

Roman history comes alive in this magnificent 13-part series. “I, Claudius” (1976, 668 min.) ranks among the most acclaimed productions in BBC history. Tracing the lives of the last of the Roman emperors, it’s an epic of ruthless ambition, shocking debauchery and murderous intrigue set in one of history’s most fascinating eras. Bearing witness to the saga is Claudius, whose stutter and limp have marked him a fool–yet whom prophesies have foretold will one day rule Rome. This collector’s edition set includes a unique documentary feature, “The Epic That Never Was” (1965, 71 min.), a remarkable behind-the-scenes look at Alexander Korda’s ill-fated 1937 screen adaptation of “I, Claudius.” Starring Merle Oberon and Charles Laughton, the chronicle of this uncompleted masterpieces is an unforgettable coda to one of the greatest stories ever told.

Personally, I thought Robert Graves (II) was incredible, but wasn’t too impressed with Josef von Sternberg.

So what’s Inu-Yasha - The Scars of Battle all about?

Contains Episodes 28-30 During a routine demon-slaying, Miroku wanders away from the others in pursuit of a young woman. (Predictably, she turns out to be a giant mantris-demon in disguise.) Although the enemy is dispatched easily enough by means of Miroku’s Wind Tunnel, as it vanishes into the void of Miroku’s hand, its claw damages the edge and now Miroku must return to the monk who helped read him, in hopes that the damage can be repaired before the wound grows and eventually swallows him whole. Later, the group reaches a village whose inhabitants have been slain by the weapon of a Demon-Slayer. Kohaku, the younger brother of Sango who died in Naraku’s castle, appears to have been involved. Sango chases him, only to find herself before Naraku himself. Told that it was he who brought Kohaku back to life (using a shard of the Sacred Jewel, no less), Sango is ordered by Naraku to steal Tetsusaiga from InuYasha else Kohaku die a second time.

Looking for Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde Double Feature?

Watch MOVIETITLEMACRO

Check out the trailer:

So what’s Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde Double Feature all about?

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931)
Fredric March won an Oscar® for playing the protagonist (and antagonist) of Robert Louis Stevenson’s story. Dr. Henry Jekyll is an honorable man of science, albeit frustrated at the enforced celibacy of a delayed wedding date. Hyde is the fearsome creature he turns into after drinking a potion, and Hyde’s appetites (mostly expressed with Miriam Hopkins’s Cockney dance-hall wench) are decidedly unrestrained. March’s performance is pretty theatrical, but it’s fun to watch; his Hyde twitches and squawks and lopes around like an ape in a tuxedo. Rouben Mamoulian’s direction has plenty of the brio of early-thirties Hollywood, and the transformations from Jekyll to Hyde are ingenious for the time. This film followed Dracula and Frankenstein into theaters by a few months, and it stands well with those horror classics–and it’s a darn sight more fun (and much more down and dirty) than the 1941 MGM version of Stevenson’s tale. –Robert Horton

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1941)
Classy MGM was not the studio most likely to make a horror movie in 1941, and in fact its production of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde ended up looking more like a glossy costume drama than a B-movie frightfest. The mood of Robert Louis Stevenson’s tale of a divided doctor is ably captured in Joseph Ruttenberg’s Oscar-nominated cinematography–more so, perhaps, than in Spencer Tracy’s lead performance. Tracy wasn’t especially happy about playing the role, although his transformations from good Dr. Jekyll to evil Dr. Hyde are convincing enough. One of the main reasons to see this version of the story is the young, impossibly beautiful Ingrid Bergman, then still a year shy of Casablanca. Bergman was cast in the good-girl part, but proved a shrewd judge of material, even this early in her Hollywood career; she finagled her way into playing the floozy instead, thus securing a more colorful acting platform than Lana Turner, who ended up in the more respectable role. Director Victor Fleming’s previous movie was a little number called Gone with the Wind, and the Big Picture approach to that project may have influenced his work here–this Dr. Jekyll is just a bit too stately, too polished to really engage. The picture is so dignified it never cuts loose with the kind of wild invention that marked the 1932 version of the story, which won Fredric March an Oscar. It’s the tale as imagined by Jekyll, rather than Hyde. –Robert Horton

Personally, I thought Fredric March was incredible, but wasn’t too impressed with Miriam Hopkins.

“I won’t give you nothing, man; I give you shit,” sneers charismatic superstar Chow Yun Fat, speaking English (with a De Niro accent) in his role as a New York restaurateur who won’t knuckle under to the (Italian) mob. Chow plays the twin brother of the character he played in the original Tomorrow, the ultraviolent, ultraromantic ultrapopular Hong Kong gangster melodrama. And the blatancy of that device is a fair indication of the sequel’s shortcomings–and of its screwy charm: this is a film that knows no shame. The bond between the natural siblings played by Ti Lung (as a reformed mobster) and Leslie Cheung (as a hot shot cop) still resonate tellingly. As a good-guy ex-thug driven batty by the slaying of his only daughter, real-life Cinema City studio chief Dean Shek gets to play a garishly extended “mad scene,” foaming at the mouth, chewing on soup bones. A later episode in which a dying man crawls to a phone booth to call his wife (and newborn daughter) in the hospital must also be some kind of lurid first in the soap sweepstakes. The final 15 minutes could be the bloodiest single shoot-out sequence ever committed to celluloid. The story line hasn’t been shaped to any particular purpose here, but the images have a golden Godfather-like glow, and this faintly anachronistic, all-stops-out wish-fulfillment approach to moviemaking still has a lot of power. –David Chute
